About the Hunt

Private Land Elk — Unit 34

Compass West manages several private blocks in Unit 34 — some of the best elk ground in New Mexico, all landowner-voucher hunts with no draw required. Across our properties we manage well over 200,000 acres statewide just for elk, and most of our guides have been on this ground for years.

It’s glassing country at its finest: pinion and juniper as far as you can see, with big meadows and open hillsides loaded with elk. Success has been a strong 90%+ most years — 280–320 bulls are the norm, with a number of 320–360+ bulls taken every season.

Early-season bow and October hunts are based from our main camp, where we have a main lodge with a dining room, showers and restrooms — but you’ll get a more authentic elk-camp feel with wall-tent sleeping arrangements, and the bulls will be screaming right outside the door all night. All meals, hot showers and just about anything you need are just steps away. Late-season hunts (November–January) move to a cozy main house here that we own, with a walk-in cooler and everything you could need waiting. Pick the ground and dates that fit you best.
