What to expect in camp.
The Camp Experience
Our guided hunts are true western "glamping": large custom 10×12 wall tents (two hunters per tent) with floors, tables and chairs, the best cots money can buy, hot showers in every camp, and full-time cooks serving three meals a day.
What's Included
All-inclusive packages include lodging, three meals a day, and full days of guided hunting, plus field care. Hunts are 2×1 with a 1×1 option for a small additional charge. Not included: NM sales tax, state hunting license and stamps, and gratuities.
Tags & Applications
We do all the work to apply for your tags — for free. We enter you in New Mexico's outfitter pool for the best draw odds and handle all the paperwork. Missed the draw? We always have landowner and over-the-counter options to fit a range of budgets.
FAQs.
What is the deposit and cancellation policy?
Once you draw, a 50% deposit is due for New Mexico hunting packages, with final payment due 30–60 days out. Your deposit is refunded only if you can fill your spot with a new hunter, so trip insurance is advisable. Colorado guided hunts take a 50% deposit at booking with the balance due 30–60 days out; on Colorado draw hunts, any deposit is fully refunded if you don't draw on hunts that require points.
Do you help me draw or apply for a tag?
Yes. We apply you in New Mexico's outfitter pool for the best odds and handle all the paperwork at no cost to you — for every New Mexico species we hunt, including elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, ibex, oryx and antelope. We also welcome hunters who have drawn their own tags and are looking for a quality outfitter. In Colorado, we can advise you on the recommended areas to hunt.
What if I don't draw a tag?
We always have guaranteed landowner tags and private-ranch or over-the-counter hunts to fit a variety of budgets, so you can plan a hunt without depending on the draw.
What's the difference between a 2×1 and 1×1 hunt?
On a 2×1 hunt, one guide works with two hunters; on a 1×1, you have a guide to yourself. Most hunts are offered 2×1 with a 1×1 upgrade available — see each hunt's pricing for details.
What's included in the price, and what isn't?
Packages include lodging, meals, guided hunting days and field care. Prices do not include your state hunting license and tags, travel to and from camp, taxidermy, meat processing, or gratuities for guides and cooks. A few hunts (oryx, some sheep and predator hunts) are structured differently — each hunt page notes the specifics. You'll also receive a contract for your personal hunt that outlines everything included and not included, for both Colorado and New Mexico.
Can non-hunting guests come along?
Absolutely. Non-hunting guest rates vary by hunt (typically $1,500–$2,000); on oryx hunts there's no charge for guests on base. Just let us know who's joining.
Do you offer youth hunts?
Yes — New Mexico has dedicated youth-only seasons for several species, and a parent or companion is included on most youth packages. See our Youth Hunts page for details.
Where are you located and licensed?
We're based in Piñon, New Mexico and are permitted statewide on U.S. Forest Service (USFS), BLM and state lands. Compass West Outfitters has been licensed by DORA (#1929) since 1997, working the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests as well as BLM lands throughout southern Colorado, and is fully insured and bonded — documentation available on request.

All other driving directions will be texted to you closer to your hunt dates, or once locations are set. At that time your camp manager will also be introduced and will supply directions. Chris is always the best contact for any information you need — guides and camp managers are often in the field and out of service.

To file a program discrimination complaint, a complainant should complete a Form AD 3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, which can be obtained online, from any USDA office, by calling (866) 632-9992, or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to USDA by:
