Mule deer and elk hunting in the great state of New Mexico We are proud to offer the very finest in trophy mule deer or elk hunting trips New Mexico has to offer. Our lodge is located in the heart of the best mule deer unit in New Mexico. Unit 2 and its subunits offer what is historically some of the best opportunities to harvest a Boon and Crocket buck in New Mexico, as well as some excellent elk hunting. This high desert hunt takes place in some of the most beautiful country in New Mexico. The terrain is a mixture of lowland and mesa top sage and grass flats and sandstone canyon country where a monster buck or bull might be around every corner. The areas are accessed by truck and hunting is a mix of glass and stalk. With the soft soil in the area we can use the trucks cut tracks to locate big bucks and bulls then plan a stalk on them or just simply try and track them out. I prefer to slowly walk mesa ridges and stop and glass as we go, this allows us to see a large area every day. This area is a major wintering and rutting area for most of the deer in the area so as the seasons go on more and more deer show up. It is not at all uncommon to pass on over 20 bucks in a week of hunting! Our lodge is right on the banks of the San Juan River which is known through out the world as a world class fly fishing destination. Besides being on the line for unit 2A, 2B and the new area unit 2C is only a few miles south of our lodge. We are offering the very best in lodging, meals and guided hunting trips this area has ever seen. With our full service lodge as the base camp, we offer: hot showers, warm rooms with satellite TV, couches and recliner chairs in addition to meals made by our private chef. Every nightly return to the lodge is a warm welcoming! With our prices comparable or lower than other tent camp operations why not make your visit to beautiful New Mexico a complete experience. The fact that we have a lodge in the area does not hold us back from offering you the chance to move to spike camps that are in the heart of the game units we hunt. There are times that the game is in more remote areas, and when that happens we are permitted and ready to move closer to the game as our guides are always ready to adapt to the situation! We also offer private land guaranteed tags for mule deer and elk in unit 2C. We have an incredible ranch under lease in unit 2C, the hardest game unit in the state to draw a trophy mule deer tag. We will be selling this incredible hunt by reservation only, for this you're going to want to book early! This is NOT a high fence ranch, its fair chase for wild deer and elk. The ranch is a mix of pinion and juniper country with large canyons full of thick bedding area. There are 2 large dirt water tanks and tons of meadow areas full of native grass. The eastern property line borders the Jicarilla Indian Reservation, world renowned for its monster mule deer and elk. It is exciting to have both the elk and deer hunting on this ranch to offer to our guests. You’re going to want to lock down early, as we limit the ranch to one group per season! 505-801-7500 or click here for our hunting information request form Mule
Deer Hunting The deer hunting you ask... Well, New Mexico has long been known for its huge elk and monster mule deer. The areas that we deer hunt offer the best chance at the mule deer of a lifetime. Many of the mule deer taken from unit 2A, 2B and what is now unit 2C are over 27" and the chance at a 30" buck is always there. Past seasons have shown us that for the person looking for that personal best mule deer, we are your best choice. Last year, 2B hunts had us into well over 50 deer a day and as many as a 100 per day on the late hunts. Unit 2 offers the very finest mule deer hunting in the state; don’t miss your chance to hunt the very finest mule deer units in the state with its top outfitting team! Draw odds have been good in the past, I will be more than willing to talk with you about the best seasons to choose as well as draw odds for the different hunts. All the units that we guide offer a good chance at a book buck, please feel free to call me anytime to talk about your best choice of units 2A-2B-2C.
The elk hunting.... Unit 2 elk hunts are great hunts with good draw odds, some of the best in the state, 2005 season 100% of our hunters drew tags. Unit 2 elk hunts are good hunts for some 300+ bulls but most are very nice 5x5-6x6 that score 250-350. We can see good numbers of animals each season and have good ‘chance’ percentages on nice bulls. Our muzzleloader hunt is one of the best in the state as well as my favorite hunt for elk in this northern area, these fill up fast so check with me about openings! The rifle hunts are also good hunts, and don’t miss the chance to hunt our late season December bull elk hunt. 4x4 trucks are how we access the area and a mix of glassing and walk hunting with some sitting on water holes and calling on early hunts is how we hunt the area. This hunt is as hard as you want to make it, we can hike big hills and glass but for the most part we can get about every place we need to with the trucks. We can get you landowner tags that are unit wide for $700-$1500 and you do not have to deal with the draw as these are guaranteed tags.
Elk Hunting the Gila Areas of New Mexico The Gila hunts are the hardest to draw in the state of New Mexico but you’re never going to get to hunt this incredible area unless you apply. In New Mexico you only pay $6 upfront to apply on-line for these great hunts. The beautiful Gila National Forest areas of New Mexico are a mix of open cedar and juniper flats and ponderosa pine forest. In these areas we specialize in both bow and muzzleloader hunts but also provide rifle hunters the opportunity to see the benefits of hunting with bow hunting guides who have to know every inch of the areas they guide. Rifle season gives us the chance to go looking for monster bulls that avoided getting close enough during the bow seasons! Most of the bulls that we take in this area are over 320 and you should have the opportunity to both see and harvest bulls in the 360-400 range! We never charge deposits on Gila hunts until you have drawn your tags, this allows us to have many more people apply for these great hunts as well as allowing you to keep your money until June. All hunters that apply for New Mexico hunts are guaranteed a spot in our Colorado bow or rifle over the counter camps if they do not draw. This allows you a guaranteed chance to hunt that season. What Our New Mexico Hunts Offer We offer only fully guided hunts in New Mexico. This includes: lodging, meals and full days guided as a part of the service. We feel that the incredible hunting opportunities this state offers are better showcased on fully guided hunts. In some of the more remote areas we guide on early season bow hunts we offer guide service only and have hunters stay at local motels and eat at restaurants of their choice. This allows us to more readily move to another location closer to the game if the guide and client choose to do so. Our hunts are all 2 hunters and 1 guide or (2x1) we also offer one-on-one hunts (1x1) for and extra charge. The 1x1 is great for people really looking to up their chances or for people looking to go hunting alone.
What to
Expect on Guided Days You’re here to hunt and we remember that, most guided days are FULL days. We are more than willing to meet your needs and adjust to whatever schedule you would like to keep but the guides treat every hunt like a once in a lifetime hunt. Many of the mule deer and elk hunts we offer are very hard to draw tags for and we feel that you should have the chance to take advantage of every minute you have to hunt. On many of the rut hunts for bulls the best plan is to hunt from before light until they stop talking, then take a long break in the field or return to camp, then head back out about 2-3 in the afternoon and hunt until dark. Experience has taught us that in the rut you can do more damage than good when in the field if the elk are not talking during the day, so it is often the best option to return to camp for a few hours in the middle of the afternoon. Days start before dawn, you and your guide will be heading to the best looking area for your hunt. Once there you’ll take advantage of the guides’ skills to call in your elk or glass up your mule deer. Lunch is normally eaten in the field when you have time to stop and take a break. Packing snacks in your day pack is always a good idea as you never know when you might be on the trail of a big bull or buck and not return to the truck for lunch. Once you have an animal down guides will help you in the field as much or little as you would like in the field preparation of your trophy (please make your choice very apparent to the guide) we understand that you may or may not want to be involved in the caping as well as packing-out of your animal. Your animal will be skinned and quartered in the field and packed-out. Call or email us today for more information: 505-801-7500 or click here for our hunting information request form New Mexico
